Russian Circles, Cloakroom, Wildhoney @ Saint Vitus
Post-metal greats Russian Circles always put on a hell of a show, and tonight and tomorrow’s sold-out Saint Vitus gigs should be no exception. There’s great support too, from the sludgy Cloakroom and the shoegazy Wildhoney.
Sheer Agony, Outside World, Dirty Blondes, Memorial Gore @ Cake Shop
Montreal’s Sheer Agony are students of the classics: The Soft Boys, The dB’s and Sloan, making quirky guitar pop that tracks frontman Jackson Macintosh’s travails through day jobs, social circles and dating. Their sound is is almost entirely out of step with what is currently going on in the musical zeitgeist…which is probably exactly where they want to be. Recommended.
Air Waves, Grooms, Drawing Boards, Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone @ Mercury Lounge
This is a super-solid bill of local acts, with some notable openers: Drawing Boards is the new band from Doug of Dirty on Purpose and Aaron of Sisters; and this is the solo live debut of Au Revoir Simone’s Annie Heart. Grooms and Air Waves are great, too, of course.
LODRO, So Pitted, Surfbort, Squad Car @ Palisades
Trio So Pitted have been mainstays in the Seattle scene for a while now, making a name for themselves with a sneery, warped, post-apocalyptic punk sound and wild stage show. Their first album for Sub Pop will be out soon and this is their first-ever NYC show.
Neon Indian (DJ), Airbird (DJ), XXXChange @ American Museum of Natural History
The One Step Beyond series combines dance music with a chance to “take a walk up the Cosmic Pathway to the Hayden Big Bang Theater where acclaimed actor Liam Neeson narrates a dynamic flight through the virtual universe based on an accurate cosmic atlas.” This edition is headlined by synth popster Neon Indian, who’s DJing.
DJ Mustard, Jubilee, Keylow @ Output
DJ Mustard’s distinct production sound has been dominating the radio for years, whether it’s his own work (like Ty Dolla $ign’s “Paranoid,” Tinashe’s “2 On,” Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell ‘Em,” Big Sean’s “I Don’t Fuck With You,” and more) or one of his many copycats. Just this week he released the Travi$ Scott collab “Whole Lotta Lovin,” which sounds like he may have yet another hit on his hands.
Holy Holy (ft. Tony Visconti & Woody Woodmansey), Morgan Visconti & Jessica Lee Morgan @ Highline Ballroom
David Bowie’s longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and drummer Woody Woodmansey (who played on four early ’70s Bowie albums) play Bowie’s songs together as Holy Holy. Tonight they’re performing 1970’s The Man Who Sold the World “and other popular tunes.” Today also happens to be Bowie’s birthday and the release day for his great new album, Blackstar.
Bridget Everett @ Joe’s Pub
Bridget Everett’s acclaimed (and highly irreverent) show “Rock Bottom” returns to Joe’s Pub for four shows this week.
