Joanna Newsom, Alela Diane & Ryan Francesconi @ Kings Theatre
Joanna Newsom finally returned from a five-year break of making albums with this year’s Divers. At first, it seemed a bit more conventional her prior releases, but it reveals itself to be just as complex and gripping. Tonight’s her first of two NYC shows. Opening is Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi (who’s worked with Joanna), who recently put out a collaborative album.
Deerhunter, Atlas Sound @ Rough Trade
Deerhunter’s new album has them returning to the dream/psychedelic pop sounds of Halcyon Digest after a trip into rawer garage rock territory on Monomania. Tonight’s their first of three NYC shows in support of it. Deerhunter co-frontman Bradford Cox’s great solo project Atlas Sound opens.
The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Animal Flag @ Baby’s All Right
TWIABP released one of the very best rock albums of this year with Harmlessness, a lushly-arranged post rock/indie rock/emo album written from a deeply personal perspective. Their recent live shows are at least as good as the record.
Dinosaur Jr. & special guests @ Bowery Ballroom
One of the quintessential American indie rock bands, Dinosaur Jr. celebrate their 30th anniversary with seven shows at Bowery Ballroom. Each night they’re play their debut album in full with an additional set filled with special guests.
Nothing Changes Party w/Consumer Electronics, Yellow Tears, Alberich, Copley Medal @ Saint Vitus
Nothing Changes has been branching out of its normal Wednesday/Home Sweet Home confines and presents this show tonight headlined by Consumer Electronics, the current group from power electronics pioneer Philip Best (Whitehouse), who recently released the brutal Dollhouse Songs.
Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield (2 shows)
After years of being merely a great live show, Wyatt Cenac is turning “Night Train” into a web series. Tonight features two tapings: the early with Sasheer Zamata, Sabrina Jalees, Matteo Lane, Phoebe Robinson, Jeffrey Joseph, and Jean Grae; and the late show is with Kurt Braunohler, Hari Kondabolu, Maeve Higgins, Josh Gondelman, and more. Both are sold out.
