It took Azealia Banks a while to drop her debut album, but it was hard to deny how good it was once she did. She also tends to cancel tours a lot, and tonight’s actually the only not-cancelled show on what would have been her fall tour.
The Weeknd, Banks, Travi$ Scott @ Barclays Center
The Weeknd is bigger than ever — perhaps you’ve heard “Can’t Feel My Face” in a car or a bar or a party or just about anywhere else — and tonight he wraps up his run of NYC arena shows.
King Diamond, Exodus @ Playstaton Theater
What would theatrical, high-voiced wailing metal be without King Diamond? Probably a lot worse. He kicks off a three-night run at Best Buy Theater tonight playing his classic 1987 album, Abigail, in full. Thrash vets Exodus open.
Elysian Fields @ The Owl
Venerable NYC band Elysian Fields are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a run of shows where they’re performing their entire catalog live. Tonight it’s 2011’s Last Night on Earth.
Hiss Golden Messenger, Frazey Ford @ Baby’s All Right
Hiss Golden Messenger put out quality folk music for years, and for his most recent album, Lateness of Dancers, he went electric. He’s great at both sounds.
Tommy Stinson, The So So Glos @ Berlin
With The Replacements reunion seemingly over and his services in Guns N’ Roses maybe not needed anymore, Tommy Stinson has some free time on his hands. He released a new EP, titled L.M.A.O., earlier this fall that retains that bash-n-pop spirit. He plays this free show tonight with Brooklyn punks The So So Glos.
The Ocean Blue @ Mercury Lounge
College radio stalwarts The Ocean Blue just saw their Sire Records catalogue reissued on vinyl, and tonight they’re playing Cerulean and their self-titled debut.
Diarrhea Planet, Music Band, Soda Bomb @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Lovers of the road, Nashville’s Diarrhea Planet keep things greasy at their wild, fun live shows.
together PANGEA, White Reaper, Simon Doom @ Shea Stadium
Another band known for crazy live shows and even crazier fans, California’s together PANGEA should inspire mayhem in Shea’s tight confines tonight. The new wavey White Reaper are worth catching too.
Soldiers of Fortune, VBA, Mike Wexler @ Union Pool
NYC indie rock super group Soldiers of Fortune (featuring members of Oneida, Chavez, Interpol and more) just released their second album which drives along with pedal-to-the-metal intensity. Malkmus showed up for their last NYC show, maybe there’ll be special guests tonight?
Colin Hay @ Town Hall
With his band Men at Work, Colin Hay was no stranger to the singles charts in the ’80s with hits like “Overkill,” “Be Good Johnny,” and “Down Under.” His career got a boost in the ’00s thanks to Scrubs and Garden State and he’s been chugging along ever since.
L.A. Witch, Las Rosas, Surfbort @ Cake Shop
With a name that almost sounds like it was chosen on purpose to enrage certain people, trio L.A. Witch are indeed from Los Angeles, and sport a dark bluesy sound that recalls a pitch-black Widowspeak or, yes, BRMC or J-A-U-know-what. But the band’s music is also heavy on smoky attitude which you 100% need with this kind of thing. Support bands are both solid.
Creepoid, Longings, Bambara @ Alphaville
Bring your earplugs tonight as this whole bill like to keep the cranked. Philly’s Creepoid are shoegazers who are too energetic to stare at their footware, Amherst, MA’s Longings rock a similar vein, and we’re not sure how duo Bambara make as big a racket as they do.
Adult Dude, Dead Stars, Katie Ellen (1/2 of Chumped) @ Union Hall
This is a cool bill of local ’90s-inspired indie rock. It’s the release party for Adult Dude’s debut album Adult Moods, and one of the first shows for Katie Ellen, the singer/guitarist and drummer of Chumped who just called it quits.
Pearl & The Beard @ Bowery Ballroom
This show should be bittersweet. It’s the record release show for Pearl & the Beard’s new alt-pop album Beast, but it’s also the band’s last show before they break up. Catch ’em now so you can say you did at the reunion!
