Miguel @ Bowery Ballroom
Miguel made one of the best albums of the alt-R&B explosion with 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, and this year he managed to follow it one that’s at least as good, Wildheart.
Hot Chip, Georgia @ Webster Hall
Coming off their strongest album arguably since The Warning, UK dance act Hot Chip hit Webster Hall for their second of two shows, tonight with Museum of Love which is fronted by Pat Mahoney who has toured as their drummer.
Father John Misty, Angel Olsen, Summer Moon @ Central Park SummerStage
Will Central Park be big enough for the oversized persona of J. Tillman’s Father John Misty? We shall see. This is a solid show overall with the great Angel Olsen opening.
Dither, Lee Ranaldo, Yo La Tengo, Mark Stewart, Matmos @ Lincoln Center Damrosch Park Bandshell
It’s a night of guitars at center stage at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival, featuring guitar quartet Dither with renowned Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo; a new collaboration with Yo La Tengo, compositions by Eve Beglarian and Joshua Lopes, plus Steve Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint” performed by Mark Stewart and a live ensemble of 13 electric guitars and basses.
Jurassic Park (movie screening), Guardian Alien @ McCarren Park
Jurassic World may be the biggest box office lizard ever, but it pales in comparison to Speilberg’s original which shows tonight at Summerscreen. Before the movie, Greg Fox’s Guardian Alien plays live. Free.
Shabazz Palaces, Eaters @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Featuring Palaceer Lazaro (Butterfly from Digable Planets), Shabazz Palaces continue to push rap into new realms, as heard on last year’s Sub Pop album, Lese Majesty. Opening act Eaters make soundtrack-y, synth compositions.
Ezra Furman, J Fernandez, Emily Einhorn Rough Trade
Having been around for a while, Ezra Furman is making waves with the poppy and deeply personal Perpetual Motion People. Opening is underrated Chicago singer-songwriter J Fernandez.
FOLD Festival @ Martha Clara Vineyards
Nile Rodgers conceived of this acronymed, two-day festival (“Freak Out, Let’s Dance”) that promises lots of cross- pollination between performers (today Duran Duran, Chaka Khan, Janelle Monae, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Rodgers’ band, Chic) and nothing but the hits.
Ratking, Bishop Nehru @ East River Park Amphitheatre
Ratking have been having a pretty good year thanks to their solid 700 Fill EP and guest spot on Earl Sweatshirt’s fantastic new album. Tonight they team up with Bishop Nehru, who’s no slouch on the mic. And it’s free.
Incubus, Deftones, Death From Above 1979, The Bots @ Jones Beach
We wouldn’t normally get excited about an Incubus tour, but alt-metal bashers Deftones and dance-punk greats Death From Above 1979 on one bill sounds like a pretty great way to spend a night.
Faith No More, Refused @ Theater at MSG
For fans of boundary-pushing heavy music, this bill is pretty amazing. Both bands returned this year with looooong-awaited new albums that had them in fine form, and both have still got it live too.
