Miguel, Dorothy @ Terminal 5
Miguel made one of the best albums of the alt-R&B explosion with 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, and this year he managed to follow it one that’s at least as good, Wildheart. Tonight’s show is sold out, and he plays NYC again at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Teen Men @ Bowery Ballroom
Remember back when it was a thing that bands would be called “blog rock”? CYHSY were one of those bands, thanks to the quick success of their blog-hyped debut. The blogs have been less kind to its followups, but for anyone who wants to relive those mid-2000s days, the band are playing the debut in full on this tour.
Power Trip, Foreseen, Hard Stripes, Red Death, Detriment, Carcosa @ Amityville Music Hall
Texas’ Power Trip, DC’s Red Death and FInland’s Foreseen all make killer crossover thrash, so if you dig that kinda stuff, this is a pretty amazing bill.
Alex G, Snoozer, Pinegrove @ Brooklyn Flea at 50 Kent
Lo-fi indie rocker Alex G returns to NYC for this free daytime show (RSVP). His deadpan stage banter makes his shows as enjoyable as his actual songs.
Duran Duran @ The Capitol Theatre
Yes, they have a guest-filled new album, Paper Gods, but let’s face it the newest song most people want to hear from Duran Duran is “Ordinary World” with the biggest excitement reserved for mid-’80s MTV hits like “Planet Earth,” “Rio,” “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Save a Prayer.” And to see them in a relatively small spot like The Capitol Theatre will surely be a treat for fans who bought these pricey tickets.
Out in the Streets Fest @ Vander Ende-Onderdonk House
This is the third year for this two day festival which features mostly local bands but happens at the lovely and historic Vander Ende-Onderdonk house. The Love Supreme and Terror Pigeon headline tonight.
X @ City Winery
L.A. punk icons X are here for three shows at City Winery; sadly guitarist Billy Zoom is battling cancer and couldn’t make the trip but part of the proceeds of these shows will go towards his medical bills.
Stan Ridgeway @ The Wonder Bar
Both with his band Wall of Voodoo and on solo albums, Stan Ridgway is a vivid storyteller, bringing a noir style (and a distinctive vocal style and harmonica-playing) to tales of love, lust, unhappy accidents, procrastination, ghost marines in Vietnam, urban ennui and other subjects. Will he play “Mexican Radio,” “Camouflage” and “Ring of Fire”? Probably.
