Culture Club @ Beacon Theater
The original lineup of ’80s icons Culture Club didn’t make it over as planned last fall but are here now for their second of two nights at Beacon Theatre. Expect multiple costume changes, plus all the hits and probably a few songs from their new album, Tribes, that’s due out early next year.
Django Django, Beat Connection @ Webster Hall
With their second album, Born Under Saturn, furthering the band’s mix of dancepop and surf rock, this will be the first NYC show Django Django has played since the new album’s release. Their live show is always a treat.
Titus Andronicus @ Shea Stadium
Titus Andronicus’ ambitious new 29-song rock opera takes them through a ton of different sounds, all while keeping the aesthetic of raw garage punk band. It’s the final night of their sold-out 5-night run at Shea Stadium, but they play NYC again in October.
The Appleseed Cast, Adjy, Annabel @ The Studio at Webster Hall
The Appleseed Cast are celebrating the 15th anniversary of their 2000 sophomore album, Mare Vitalis, which was pretty much the perfect halfway point between their emo roots and the post-rock territory they would explore later on. The Tiny Engines-signed Annabel are a newer band who do justice to the emo/indie style of that era. Adjy replaced Dads, who had to drop off this tour. BV editor Andrew Sacher is also DJing between sets.
Watkins Family Hour (ft. Sean & Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, Fiona Apple, more) @ City Winery
Watkins Family Hour is something of a super collective, led by 2/3 of Nickel Creek and including a bunch of other members, the most famous one being Fiona Apple. They recently released their self-titled debut album, which entirely features covers (Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, more). Tonight begins their 3-night run at City Winery, and then they play a free Lincoln Center show in August.
The Wilful Boys, Droor @ Tender Trap
Wilful Boys are a crew of Australians living in NYC, making shouty, shriiingy punk rock. That’s a style Australians seem especially good at and singer/drummer Steven Fisher’s vocals don’t so much drip with attitude as they are jet-propelled at your face. This is a free show.
Hot Soup Comedy @ Irish Exit
Lots of big names (Louis CK, Jim Gaffigan, Hannibal Buress) make surprise drop-ins at this free weekly comedy show at Midtown East’s Irish Exit. Starts at 8 PM.
