Brian Wilson, Rodriguez @ Jones Beach
Pop legend Brian Wilson released a new solo album this year, and he’s been playing some of that on this tour, but the majority of the 30+ song setlists have been Beach Boys favorites from “Little Deuce Coupe” to “Heroes and Villains” to “Sail On, Sailor.” His band includes fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. Making for a great double bill, storied folk singer Rodriguez opens.
Melvins, Le Butcherettes @ Santos Party House
Sludge vets Melvins last released Hold It In in 2014, and there’s a documentary on them set to come out next year. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows with Le Butcherettes.
Miguel @ Le Poisson Rouge
Miguel’s new album, Wildheart, is out today. Like his last one, it’s sultry R&B with bits of psychedelia and rock guitar, and Miguel’s fantastic voice leads the way. Tonight he plays this intimate free show (which you had to RSVP for), and he’ll play a much bigger NYC show at Terminal 5 in August.
Vince Staples @ Apple Store Soho (5:30 PM)
Vince Staples put out his excellent debut LP this week. It’s got futuristic production from No ID and a small impressive cast of collaborators, political of-the-moment lyrics, and killer delivery from Vince. He’s in NYC for a discussion & short performance at the Apple Store Soho this evening, and then…
Fetty Wap, K Camp, Tink, Goldlink, Vince Staples, Raury, Shy Glizzy, OG Maco, Kidd Kidd, DeJ Loaf @ Best Buy Theater (XXL Freshmen Show)
…Vince heads to Best Buy Theater for the annual XXL Freshmen show. There are others worth catching at this one too, including “Trap Queen” hitmaker Fetty Wap, Tink, Goldlink, Raury, and DeJ Loaf, to name a few.
Sondre Lerche, Steve Marion, Jonas Alaska @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Sondre Lerche’s ambitious 2014 album, Please, found him dealing with divorce but still managing to find a hummable tunes amidst all the raw nerves and bare emotions. He’s a real charmer live.
Widowspeak, Small Black, Eternal Summers @ Brooklyn Bowl
Widowspeak sound rejuvenated on their forthcoming All Yours, managing to maintain their breathy vibe while finding fresh sounds. Get an early listen live tonight and if you’re going, get there early for Virginia’s Eternal Summers
Hugh Cornwell @ Good Room
The voice behind such songs as “Peaches,” “Golden Brown,” and “No More Heroes,” the former Stranglers frontman plays with his solo band tonight.
Win Win, Cookies, DD Elle @ Rough Trade
Win Win have left their dancepop beginnings for a more textured, organic sound that’s much harder to define on new album, Primaries. There’s still an emphasis on rhythm and melody, but this is much weirder, trippier and more interesting. Tonight’s the record release show.
Rooftops Films w/ Computer Magic, ‘Bridesmaids’ @ Solar One
It’s a free night of entertainment in Kips Bay featuring the 2011 hit comedy Bridesmaids with an opening set from Brooklyn synthpop band Computer Magic. 8:30 doors.
Imagine Dragons, Metric, Halsey @ Barclays Center
We don’t recommend seeing the headliner (or the opener), but it’s a chance to see Canadian indie band Metric who recently put out the lead single from their upcoming sixth album.
