Spoon, The Antlers @ King’s Theatre
Spoon are such a consistently good band it’s easy to take them for granted. Last year’s They Want My Soul was yet another winner in their catalog. This is their first of two Brooklyn shows this week.
The Acid, Young Magic, Lord Raja @ Lot 45
The Acid are a trio featuring one Brit (veteran DJ/producer Adam Freeland), one American (math wiz and Abelton expert/instructor Steve Nalepa), and an Australian (singer Ry X). The three, whose combined efforts make super chilled out neo-R&B, released their debut LP, titled Liminal, via Mute last year. They play tonight with remix pals Young Magic.
David Monks (of Tokyo Police Club), Fort Lean, ARMS @ Mercury Lounge
While Tokyo Police Club are still going, frontman Dave Monks released his first solo record, an EP titled All Signs Point To Yes, today. He brings a nice, less-is-more approach to the EP, allowing the songs to shine through. He celebrates tonight.
Songhoy Blues @ Mercury Lounge
Songhoy Blues fled their home of Northern Mali when armed Jihadists took control and banned music altogether. In the Southern Mali city of Bamako, they caught the attention of Damon Albarn and Nick Zinner who were there in 2013 with the traveling “Africa Express” project. Zinner ended up producing and playing on Songhoy Blues’ debut album, Music in Exile, and he brings a nice grit to their sound. They are an exuberant live band and definitely worth catching.
Woods, Quilt @ Rough Trade
Woods just wrapped up a short tour and will ease back into the stability of home with this Brooklyn show. Meanwhile, Quilt just wrapped up recording their new album with Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere producing. We should get a bunch of new songs tonight, plus trippy visuals from the awesome Drippy Eye Projections folks.
Iceage, Amen Dunes, Low Life @ 315 Ten Eyck St.
Iceage bring their moody Danish punk to NYC for two shows tonight. This is the first, and it’s with the great psych rockers Amen Dunes.
Iceage, Future Punx @ Acheron
After the 315 Ten Eyck show, Iceage head to Acheron for a late show, and this one’s with local new wavers Future Punx.
GBH, Total Chaos @ Gramercy Theater
British street punks vets GBH have been doing it since the early ’80s, and they still have the look, attitude and sound that made people fall in love with them.
Aziz Ansari @ NYU Skirball Center
Comedian Aziz Ansari has a new book out, Modern Romance, where he goes deeper on the way we currently date (Tinder, texting, etc), a topic he talks a lot about in his standup. This is the the NYC stop of his book tour, and he’s also doing a signing at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square at noon.
Slayer @ The Paramount
Thrash metal legends Slayer are releasing a new album called Repentless on 9/11, but ahead of that they’ve got four NYC-area shows. This is the first of a two-night stand at The Paramount, and they return for two more in July with King Diamond, Code Orange and others.
Chastity Belt, Happy You, Shadow Walker @ Baby’s All Right
Having just wrapped up their tour with Courtney Barnett, Seattle’s Chastity Belt swing through NYC for one more show. They are a lot of fun live, too.
Colin Stetson, Sara Neufeld Duo @ Bowery Ballroom
Saxophonist Colin Stetson and violinist Sarah Neufeld have played together previously — both with The Arcade Fire and as an instrumental duo — and put their collaborations to tape on their new album, Never were the way she was. That record was recorded live to tape so expect a somewhat improvisational vibe tonight.
Active Child, Low Roar @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Active Child’s new album, Mercy, is out today and he plays a release show tonight.
