Chastity Belt, Mega Bog, Nail Polish @ Rough Trade
Having just played three sold-out Bowery Ballroom shows opening for Courtney Barnett, Seattle’s Chastity Belt will headline this BrooklynVegan-presented late show. If you haven’t heard Chastity Belt’s new album, Time to Go Home, it puts real snarl (and welcome humor) into jangly pop. Mega Bog and Nail Polish open, and tickets are still available.
Treasure Fleet, The Shackletons, Concreatures @ Mercury Lounge
Treasure Fleet include members of The Arrivals, The Lawrence Arms and The Smoking Popes, and they inject their punk background with a dose of ’60s psych pop. It works. Tonight’s their first of three NYC-area shows this weekend.
Priests, Greys, Skating Polly, Done @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
It’s the second to last show ever at Brooklyn Night Bazaar, and it’s a good bill with DC political post-punks Priests, Canadian noise punks Greys, and more.
Susanne Sundfor, White Prism @ Rough Trade
Norwegian art pop musician Susanne Sundfor has collaborated with M83 and Royksopp, and she makes art pop in a similar realm to Zola Jesus and Austra. Tonight’s her second of two NYC shows on this tour.
Bambara, Beech Creeps, Anwar Sadat, The Flag @ Palisades
It’s a good bill of punkish bands at Palisades tonight with Brooklyn’s eardrum-crushing Bambara, the dissonant/noisy Beech Creeps, and Louisvilles post-hardcore-ish Anwar Sadat.
Conan, Mantar, Black Pussy @ Saint Vitus
Liverpool’s Conan have been putting out killer psychedelic doom albums for half a decade now (most recently last year’s Blood Eagle), but this is their first-ever US tour. Making the show doubly exciting, German Melvins-y duo Mantar play their first NYC show since the release of their debut album (or maybe ever?).
Face to Face, Iron Chic @ Bowery Ballroom
’90s punks Face to Face kick off a three-night NYC run tonight, which will have them playing their first three records in full, one a night. Tonight it’s 1992’s Don’t Turn Away, and Long Island’s excellent gravelly-voiced punks Iron Chic open.
Wolfbrigade, Nightfall, Grudges, special guests @ Acheron
Swedish d-beaters Wolfbrigade finally return to NYC for the first time in a while tonight, ahead of their MDF appearance this weekend. Special guests are promised… who could they be?
Yonatan Gat, Crown Larks, Turnip King, Jerry Paper @ Aviv
The former Monotonix man wraps up his four-week residency at DIY spot Aviv and tonight’s should be fun with indie rockers Turip King and oddball charmer Jerry Paper.
Vadaat Charigim, Wildhoney, Dead Heavens, The Cabana Kids @ Baby’s All Right
Isreali’s Vaadat Charigim just released their sophomore album, Sinking As A Stone, which has them stretching out their shoegazy compositions, allowing them plenty of space to drift on the breeze. Touring after Austin’s Levitation, they’re in town to play Baby’s All Right on Friday with Walter Schreifels’ garage/psych band Dead Heavens and Wildhoney which is a pretty great triple bill.
Condo Fucks (aka Yo La Tengo), Antietam, Speed The Plough @ Cake Shop
Cake Shop is celebrating its 10th birthday with some “super shows” on the weekends this month, and tonight is indeed pretty super, with Yo La Tengo’s cover-loving alter egos, Condo Fucks, playing the tiny stage. Also playing are two other long-running NY-area acts, Antietam and Speed the Plough. Advance tickets are sold out, but there might be some available at the door. Try early.
Rødhåd, Atom TM, Tobias., Follakzoid, Alex From Queens, Antenes @ Good Room
Chilean psych band Föllakzoid released their third album this month via Sacred Bones. It’s four long, interconnected tracks making for a seriously heavy trip. Zone out tonight with a bill that also features ambient producer Rødhåd. Föllakzoid are on at 9 PM.
Ex-Humans, Tough Shits, Fleshlights, Vug Arakas @ Union Pool
Kick-start your Memorial Day Weekend with this killer lineup of garage-punk featuring Austin’s Flesh Lights, Philly’s The Tough Shits and local burners
Dan Deacon, Prince Rama, Ben O’Brien, Wume @ Warsaw
Whether or not you want to listen to his albums, Dan Deacon shows are usually a lot of positive fun, with crowd participation, mobile app participation and other hijinx. Same goes for free-spirit duo Prince Rama.
Sam Cohen (of Apollo Sunshine), Pavo Pavo @ Mercury Lounge
Onetime Yellowbirds (and Apollo Sunshine) frontman Sam Cohen further explored space-pop territory on this year’s solo album Cool It.
The Rentals, Rey Pila, Radiation City @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Matt Sharp’s post-Weezer band The Rentals released their first album in a decade and a half in 2014 via Polyvinyl which pretty much picked up where they left off (in a good way). Radiation City’s Lizzy Ellison and Patti King are also playing in The Rentals (taking on the keyboards/vocals role held by Lucius previously) for this tour, and the live band also includes STRFKR’s Shawn Glassford.
Primal Scream @ Stone Pony (NJ)
Having dabbled in punk, dub, dance music, straight-up rock n’ roll and just about every other genre, Scottish band Primal Scream have managed to stay fresh longer than most other bands originating from the mid-’80s, and frontman Bobby Gilespie remains the epitome of lanky cool.
B-52s @ Wellmont Theatre
Coming up quickly on their 40th anniversary, The B-52’s still bring the party with a catalogue of classic dance-friendly postpunky new wave.
Mac DeMarco @ Surf Lodge
Montauk’s Surf Lodge kicks off it’s 2015 series of free, outdoor summer concerts with loveable goofball (and seriously good songwriter it should be said) Mac DeMarco.
Mysteryland
It’s the first day of electronic festival Mysteryland, which takes place at the original location of Woodstock (Bethel Woods Center for the Arts), and today’s lineup includes Richie Hawtin, A-Trak and more.
