Indie rock vet Mary Timony unleashes her inner rock star with power trio Ex Hex, making killer glammy power pop. Tonight’s show is ex-tra special with recommended rabble-rousers Sheer Mag and more on the bill.
The Juan Maclean @ Union Pool
Now in the second half of their six-show Brooklyn residency, DFA mainstays The Juan Maclean move to Union Pool for the final three shows. They’re playing as a four-piece and we hear their Cameo shows last weekend were killer. Sold out.
Jeremy Earl – “Landscapes” w/ Kevin Morby @ Cinders Gallery
Woods frontman Jeremy Earl will have some of his latest artwork on display at Cinders and tonight’s the opening reception with a live performance by Kevin Morby. 7-10 PM, free.
Manic Street Preachers, Jennie Vee @ Webster Hall
2014 marked the 20th anniversary of Manic Street Preachers’ most acclaimed album,The Holy Bible — the band’s last with Richie Edwards — and are celebrating by playing it in full on this tour. This will be their first NYC show in six years.
Eaters, Yvette, Dan Friel @ Baby’s All Right
Both synthy Eaters and noisy Yvette have been working on new records and will be trying out new stuff tonight. Homemade electronics wiz Dan Friel opens.
Crying, Slaughter Beach, Dog, Trace Mountains, Broken Beak @ Shea Stadium
Most excitingly, Modern Baseball co-frontman Jake Ewald’s solo project Slaughter Beach, Dog makes its way to NYC tonight. But it’s definitely worth getting there early for his tourmate Broken Beak, and the bill is rounded out by two quality locals: the Rush-inspired Crying and lo-fi singer/songwriter Trace Mountains (aka Dave from LVL UP).
Slick Rick, Hot Sugar, Hash Money, Mess Kid, STL GLD @ The Wick
Hip hop lifer Slick RIck has been crazy since the ’80s, and he’s still very active today. He’s promising special guests at tonight’s set. Also notable is opener Hot Sugar, who’s collaborated with Heems, Kitty Pryde, Antwon and others, but is now maybe more known for doing most of the score for <i>Broad City</i>.
Delicate Steve, No Chief, Celestial Shore @ Brooklyn Bowl
Behold the guitar tonight in all it’s noodly glory with mastery from both headliner Delicate Steve and openers Celestial Shore. In between is No Chief, the solo project from Sebadoh drummer Bob D’Amico.
Aye Nako, Slim Charles, Bluffing, Large Human @ Aviv
NYC’s Aye Nako do pop punk right, and they’ve been playing a lot lately but any chance to see them is a good one.
US Christmas, Generation of Vipers, Thera Roya @ Saint Vitus
Neurot-signed psych metallers U.S. Christmas are currently on the road with related band Generation of Vipers, hitting NYC tonight.
San Fermin w/ Metropolis Ensemble, White Hinterland @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With a sound somewhere between indie and Broadway, San Fermin make stirring, baroque pop. Tonight they’ll be playing songs from their new album, backed by the Metropolis Ensemble.
Peaer, Battle Ave, Weather Underground, Robot Princess @ Palisades
Battle Ave make chilled-out, reverby indie rock (it makes sense that they share a producer with Real Estate), and they’ve got some great melodies and harmonies in there too.
Lindstrom, Eric Duncan, Ron Like Hell, Vinny Villbass @ Good Room
Collaborator with Todds (Terje and Rundgren), remixer to the stars and general cool dude, Norwegian producer Lindstrom spins tonight.
Rachel Trachtenberg, The Scene Is Now, George Sand, Luscious Skin @ Cake Shop
Formerly of Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players and Supercute, Rachel now does her own solo thing and plays tonight with NYC indie rock vets The Scene is Now.
