Protomartyr, The Gotobeds, Grooms @ The Wick
Detroit’s mighty Protomartyr and new Sub Pop signees The Gotobeds share a similar worldview (and probably a love of The Fall and Wire). They also made two of our favorite records of 2014, so we’re pleased at punch to be presenting this show tonight. Get there early for excellent Brooklyn band Grooms. Hope to see you tonight!
Liturgy, Mivos Quartet, Psalm Zero @ Saint Vitus
Liturgy’s new album is “not metal,” but is does retain some elements of that sound (like blastbeats) and incorporates them into their new art rock style. Tonight’s show is with new-music ensemble Mivos Quartet and another metal/non-metal band, Psalm Zero. Sold out.
Alex G, LVL UP, Brandon Can’t Dance @ Baby’s All Right
Alex G’s scrappy DIY-style indie rock has been winning a lot of people over lately, and his deadpan stage banter is just as entertaining as the music. Tonight’s show is sold out.
Jeff Beck, Tyler Bryant @ The Paramount
Guitar legend Jeff Beck (of The Yardbirds, The Jeff Beck Group and more) returns to the NYC-area this week for a few shows, this being the second.
Dowsing, Everything Ever, Slim Charles @ Paper Box
Of the “emo revival” bands, Dowsing are one of the ones who quite literally revive a past style of emo, specifically the kind coming out of the midwest in the mid-late ’90s. If you miss that stuff, Dowsing could be right up your alley.
Hauschka, Sontag Shogun, itsnotyouitsme @ Le Poisson Rouge
Experimental German composer/musician Hauschka released his latest album, a collection of works for prepared pianos called Abandoned City, earlier this year via Temporary Residence Ltd./City Slang. He’ll challenge audiences tonight.
Big Terrific @ Cameo
This long-running free comedy series, hosted by soon-to-be Bravo cooking competition host Max Silvestri, is coming to an end at the end of the month, so don’t be surprised if there are extra special guests at the remaining shows. Free — get there early.
