Lower Dens, Matteah Baim, Gold Dime @ Baby’s All Right
Lower Dens’ new album, Escape from Evil, finds Jana Hunter opening up a little, both emotionally and melodically, making for the band’s most satisfying album to date. This is the record release show and is sold out. They’ll be back in NYC during Northside.
Years and Years @ Le Poisson Rouge
Winter Storm Juno kept buzzy UK duo Years and Years (BBC’s “Sound of 2015”) from playing LPR in January and they’re back for makeup dates. Sold out.
HINDS, Brainfreeze @ Mercury Lounge
Spanish band HINDS get called “shambolic” a lot, but in this case it’s a good thing (they are not trying to be Rush) as their brand of of garagey pop trades more in enthusiasm, charm and catchy tunes. They are undeniably fun live.
Twin Shadow, Lolawolf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Twin Shadow has always been anthemic, but on his new album Eclipse he goes full stadium, aiming for the back fences with every song. This is the first of two sold-out MHOW shows.
Swervedriver, Gateway Drugs @ Saint Vitus
Arguably the heaviest, most rocking of the original UK shoegaze acts, Swervedriver returned this year with their first new album since the ’90s — and it’s pretty damn good. But expect to hear favorites like “Duel” and “Rave Down,” too. This is their final NYC show this trip and tickets are still available.
Mutilation Rites, Anicon, Iron Force, Sunrot @ The Acheron
Brooklyn black metallers Mutilation Rites have been on the road and tonight they play a hometown show with other local regulars: fellow BMers Anicon, speedsters Iron Force, and NJ’s sludgy Sunrot.
Haunting Renditions with Eliot Glazer @ The Bell House
Eliot Glazer (brother of Broad City‘s Ilana Glazer) brings his classically-trained pipes to his live show “Haunting Renditions” where he takes some of pop music’s most infamous songs and turns them into highbrow, sweeping ballads. Tonight’s special guests are Abbi Jacobsen of Broad City and Jon Glaser.
Deborah Harry @ Cafe Carlyle
Blondie singer Deborah Harry continues her residency at Upper East side cabaret supper club Cafe Carlyle tonight. It runs through April 4.
