The Growlers, Broncho @ Baby’s All Right
Party rockers The Growlers released Chinese Fountain back in September which found the band in a laid-back mood, drawing inspiration from twangy early-’60s rock, with a few danceable numbers in there as well. Tonight’s the last night of their five-night-stand at Baby’s All Right with Broncho.
Jeff Rosenstock five free shows in five boroughs
Jeff Rosenstock has a long musical history, first leading Arrogant Sons of Bitches and then Bomb the Music Industry. Now he’s fully pursuing the solo route, and his new album is a great batch of indie-punk songs. Today he plays five free all ages shows, one in each NYC borough, beginning at 10 AM. Openers include Laura Stevenson, Dan Friel, Spraynard, Chris Gethard and more. Full schedule here.
Self Defense Family, Creative Adult @ Studio at Webster Hall
Makthaverskan had to unfortunately drop off this show due to visa issues, but it’s still a great bill with arty post-hardcore band Self Defense Family and dark punks Creative Adult.
Enabler, Hivesmasher, Moon Tooth, Shitkill @ Saint Vitus
Hardcore bashers Enabler have a new LP on the way, and though most details are still TBA, maybe we’ll hear some new stuff tonight.
Jonny Fritz, Robert Ellis @ Rockwood Music Hall
Alt-country singer Johnny Fritz (formerly Jonny Corndawg) headlines this show, and making it a great double bill, the likeminded (and fellow friend of Deer Tick) Robert Ellis opens.
Trace Mountains, John Galm, Bethlehem Steel @ 603 Bushwick Ave (upstairs)
Trace Mountains is the other project of LVL UP’s Dave Benton, which is a little on the softer side than LVL UP. And John Galm is/was frontman of the bands Snowing, Street Smart Cyclist, Slow Warm Death and The Beds, and his solo work is definitely softer than those bands (and very depressing).
Cursive, Beach Slang, John Congleton’s Nighty Nite @ Asbury Lanes
Cursive are currently celebrating their great cello-filled 2003 album, The Ugly Organ, on this tour (with a cellist), and one of 2014’s best new punk bands Beach Slang is opening. Three NYC shows are on the way, but first this NJ show. Indie rock go-to producer John Congleton’s band opens.
Dropkick Murphys, The Mahones, Blood or Whiskey @ Irving Plaza
It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day, and what better time to see Boston’s favorite Celtic punks Dropkick Murphys? Tonight continues their 5-show run in the NYC-area.
Doug Loves Movies @ Gramercy Theatre
Doug Benson comes to NYC for another taping of his very popular podcast.
