D’Angelo @ Apollo Theatre
It only took D’Angelo 14 years to follow up his beloved Voodoo with a new album, Black Messiah, that he dropped late last year. So far it seems like this one’s pretty equally loved — countless people called it the best album of 2014. Tonight’s his first NYC show since its release.
The Felice Brothers, Strand of Oaks @ Cannon’s Blackthorn
Long Island’s annual “Shine A Light” benefit show (presented by The Tommy Brull Foundation) happens with two great folk rock bands this year. Sold out.
The Movielife, Crime in Stereo, Zumo Kollie @ Irving Plaza
Late ’90s/early ’00s Long Island melodic hardcore band The Movielife broke up in ’03 after two albums of Lifetime/Gorilla Biscuits worship and a third album and EP that pushed that sound in new directions. They briefly reunited in 2010-11, and now they’re thankfully back once again. Tonight’s their second of two sold-out Irving Plaza shows with their pals Crime In Stereo.
California X, Pinkwash, Downtown Boys, Worriers, Nuclear Santa Claust, Brick Mower, Alice, Chris Gethard (host) @ Knitting Factory (Don GIovanni showcase)
The Don Giovanni showcases continue tonight with another great lineup. There’s sludge rockers California X, noisy punks Pinkwash, confrontational punks Downtown Boys, Lauren Measure’s current band Worriers, the Ramones-inspired Nuclear Santa Claust, garage-y punks Brick Mower, and the reverby Alice. Comedian Chris Gethard hosts.
Jason Isbell, Damien Jurado @ Beacon Theatre
A former Drive-By Trucker, Jason Isbell’s most recent album, Southeastern won best Album, best Artist, and best Song at the 2014 Americana Music Honors.
Chop and Quench, Underground System, Damian Quinones (y Su Nuevo Conjunto), Earl Maxton (DJ Set) @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar puts local crafts, microbrews, food-truck type eats, mini golf, ping pong, and live music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s live entertainment is headlined by Chop and Quench which is the members of the cast and band of FELA! the musical.
The New Lines, Jet Black, Soft Science, Pale Lights @ Cake Shop
Long-running zine The Big Takeover turns 35 this year and is planning a series of shows. This is the first of them featuring Brooklyn baroque-psych band The New Lines, plus Quebec’s Jet Black (who roar like Swervedriver), and Sacramento, CA’s Soft Science (also shoegazey but but more on the dreamy side) and jangly indiepop band Pale Lights.
Invisible Days, Lame Drivers, Big Quiet, Snowmans of Love, Scupper @ Pine Box Rock Shop
WFMU DJ Paul Bruno launched his new label Unblinking Ear Records with a killer compilation titled Serious Rockers. Five of the bands featured on that play this release show tonight.
Juan Wauters @ Fulton Stall Market
The Beets frontman plays this free 2 PM show at the Seaport’s indoor market.
Hannibal Buress @ Capitol Theatre
Once an underground favorite and known as comedian’s comedian, Hannibal Buress is nobody’s secret anymore.
Brooklyn Flea Record Fair
The Brooklyn Flea’s indoor space on Dean St. in Crown Heights will have a mini Record Fair with a mix of tables from labels, record stores and used vendors, including Captured Tracks, ATO, Rough Trade Shops, and Warp. There will also be DJs and a pop-up bar with Dogfish Head beer. It runs 10 AM – 6 PM.
Lee Ranaldo, Adam Rudolph’s Go (Organic Guitar Orchestra) @ Rockwood Music Hall
The annual Alternative Guitar Summit is underway, and probably the most exciting day (at least from an indie rock standpoint) is today because Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo is on board to headline the night.
Eyehategod, Full of Hell, cleanteeth, Clamfight @ Saint Vitus
Sludge legends Eyehategod are still touring in support of their excellent 2014 self-titled LP, and tonight the begin a sold-out 2-night stand at Saint Vitus. Different openers both nights, and they’re all worth catching too, especially the wild hardcore band Full of Hell.
Fleetwood Mac @ Mohegan Sun Arena
Fleetwood Mac are now back with their entire classic lineup — Christine McVie, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham — and tonight they continue their multi-night NYC-area run. They’ve still got it and they play all the hits, so see them while you still can.
