Faith No More, Le Butcherettes @ Webster Hall
Though they had fluke hit with “Epic,” Faith No More have always been a deeply strange band, blending disparate music styles into something truly their own. Out next week, their new album Sol Invictus is their first since 1997. They celebrate tonight and Thursday at what is a very small venue for them.
Vetiver, Eric D. Johnson @ Bowery Ballroom
Vetiver, aka Bay Area resident Andy Cabic, released Complete Strangers, back in March, another fine collection of spacey folk rock. He plays tonight with Fruit Bats singer Eric D Johnson.
Jane’s Addiction, A Place to Bury Strangers @ Brooklyn Bowl
Veteran alt-rock outfit Jane’s Addiction are playing their 1988 major label debut, Nothing’s Shocking, and if you’re going, do check out longtime Brooklyn noisemakers/guitarthrowers A Place to Bury Strangers.
Death Valley Girls, The Gooch Palms @ Elvis Guesthouse
A killer garage-rock double bill, featuring Australia’s party-forward Gooch Palms and LA riff-n-wailers Death Valley Girls.
Kaiser Chiefs, Priory @ Irving Plaza
Eleven years since “I Predict a Riot” and “Oh My God” catapulted them the stardom, the Kaiser Chiefs soldier on.
Tennis, Kuroma @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Boat-loving Denver duo Tennis released Ritual In Repeat (produced by Black Keys’ Patrick Carney) last year, furthering their transformation from reverby indie types into anthemic pop indie types. If you’re going, MGMT-related band Kuroma are worth seeing.
Merzbow, Pharmakon, Ron Morelli , Prurient, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Aaron Dilloway, Marshstepper, Uniform @ Output
Part of the Red Bull Music Academy, Nothing Changes take their late-night party from it’s usual Home Sweet Home locale, and into danceclub Output — featuring an impressive array of punk, electronics, and other stuff you could vaguely associate with goth/experimental/outsider what have you. This should be a fun, weird night.
Pianos Become the Teeth, Loma Prieta, Gates @ Saint Vitus
On their recent third album, Pianos Become the Teeth stopped screaming but harnessed that same level of intensity in a different way and came out with their best record yet. Tonight’s openers fall on both sides of PBTT’s sound. There’s Loma Prieta repping the heavy side, and Gates repping the pretty stuff.
Death Vessel, Blood Warrior, Air Waves, Frog @ Palisades
Death Vessel’s (aka Joel Thibodeau) latest album, last year’s Island Intervals on Sub Pop, is a very solid indie folk record with gorgeous falsettos from both Joel himself and his collaborator Jonsi of Sigur Ros.
Crosby, Stills & Nash @ State Theatre
Folk rock as we know it wouldn’t be the same without Crosby, Stills & Nash, who continue to inspire new groups and whose classic material still sounds timeless. They play two Brooklyn shows later this week, but tonight they’re nearby in New Brunswick.
Tanlines, Mas Ysa @ Rough Trade
Brooklyn dancepop duo Tanlines embrace guitars, drums and other acoustic instruments on their new album, Highlights, which is out next week. They celebrate early tonight.
John Mulaney @ Capitol Theatre
His sitcom didn’t do so well, but John Mulaney is still a very funny guy. He’s in his element tonight.
