Toronto indie folk band Great Lake Swimmers have been at it for over a decade, and last month they returned with their sixth album, A Forest of Arms.

Natalie Prass (once a member of Jenny Lewis’ touring band) is young but her music seemingly comes from a different era, recalling Dusty Springfield or even pre-rock pop.

Japanese trio ZZZ’s make noisy, shriiiing-y, intense postpunk skronk. They’re gearing up for Austin’s Levitation Fest with a few NYC shows. See ’em tonight with a host of similarly calamitous acts.
HUNI release party @ Night of Joy
Dum Dum girls singer Dee Dee launches her new gothy/electro/R&B project, HUNI, tonight at Night of Joy. She’ll be DJing along with UUV and Young Beto. It’s free.
Kiesza, Betty Who @ Irving Plaza
Kiesza got a lot of buzz last year for her ’90s-style pop-house hit “Hideaway” and its Williamsburg-centric video. Tonight she plays her hometown on her tour with Betty Who.
The Meatmen, Against The Grain, Mutant Scum @ Saint Vitus
Last year, Michigan hardcore legends The Meatmen put out their first album in 18 years which was as crude and politically incorrect as ever (song titles like “The Ballad of Stinky Penis,” “KKK,” etc). Tonight their tour with Against The Grain ploughs through NYC.
A$AP ANT, Sha Hef, Dougie F. @ Studio at Webster Dreams
Not as popular as fellow A$AP Mob members Ferg or Rocky, but A$AP Ant still knows how to put on a fun show. Maybe some of his pals will show up?
Casey Veggies, Trial & Era @ SOB’s
California rapper Casey Veggies is planning to release his major label debut this year, and the singles he’s put out from it so far sound pretty promising.
Excepter @ Home Sweet Home
It’s “An Evening with Excepter” featuring your favorite “synthetic protest band engineered to erase cultural distinctions through polarized confusion.” Sure to be interesting, this 10 PM show is also free.
Lapsley, Ronald Paris @ Baby’s All Right
Recent XL signee Lapsley (aka British singer/songwriter Holly Lapsley Fletcher) makes the kind of downtempo pop that we’ve gotten a lot of in the time since James Blake’s debut LP (video below). Tonight she plays NYC with support from Porches frontman Aaron Maine in his Ronald Paris guise. Sold out.
Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
This week Wyatt Cenac and Night Train welcome guests Guy Branum, Tyler Fischer, Greg Warren, Kiran Deol, Special Guest DJ Donwill, “and more!”
