It’s been five years since NYC has gotten a full-on Ty Segall rock show and he did not disappoint on on Monday night at Webster Hall. His current band is a little scaled down from the two-drummer face-melting extravaganza that was the First Taste tour, but he’s armed with a tight unit of regular collaborators — guitarist Emmett Kelly, bassist Mikal Cronin, Wand drummer Evan Burrows and keyboardist Ben Boye — who really know each other well as musicians, and they were on fire Monday night.
Out in support of this year’s Three Bells, their Webster Hall set was dominated by that album, with eight songs, including “The Bell,” “Void,” “I Hear” and “Hi Dee Dee” which were the first four songs of the show. More recent albums like First Taste and Harmonizer were skipped entirely in favor of older material from Melted, Goodbye Bread and Twins, plus a song each from Hello Hi, Emotional Mugger, Freedom’s Goblin and Manipulator. Burrows’ drumming style helped give everything a heavy prog vibe and in addition to being incredible players, Kelly, Cronin and Segall nailed the harmonies. It was a fantastic show.
The show was opened by Ty’s Drag City labelmates Sharpie Smile who brought out Parquet Courts‘ A. Savage for a few songs. Check out photos from the whole night by P Squared, along with Ty’s setlist and fan-shot video, below.
