Civ of Gorilla Biscuits hosted the first annual New York City Tattoo Arts Convention at Terminal 5 from July 26-28. The con took over every floor/balcony of the large concert venue, and they held concerts on the roof! We weren’t sure how that would work, but they set up a stage outside, and the roof even has its own bar, bathrooms, and balcony, and it was actually a really cool setup on a beautiful evening when we showed up to catch the Friday night show that featured two Revelation Records vets playing reunion shows along with newer hardcore bands Raw Brigade, Spaced (who just released their great debut album This Is All We Ever Get on Rev), and Popeye from Farside’s new band Calling Hours. The crowd visibly included many other hardcore legends like Walter Schreifels, Vinnie Stigma, Danny Diablo, and Mike Dijan.
Into Another headlined for what was their first show in like 5 years, and the approximately-500 capacity crowd’s energy was huge for them as people sang along to what was an amazing set by the hard-to-define Richie Birkenhead-fronted post-hardcore band. They have more upcoming shows, and we hope they don’t leave for so long again.
And though IA definitely brought their crowd, before them was perhaps the most-anticipated set of the night because it was the first show in 25 years for Chaka Malik’s post-Burn, post-hardcore band Orange 9mm who now include guitarist Taylor McLam (who joined the band as bassist in 1996 and replaced Chris Traynor on guitar when he left to play in Helmet that same year), and two new members: Chris Enriquez (On the Might of Princes, Spotlights) on drums and Cory Bonfiglio on bass. Two guest vocalists also joined during the high energy show: WWE wrestler Montel Vontavious Porter who said how special it was for him to be up there, and Shannon Moore from Activator. We assume this won’t be the last time we hear from this band again. We didn’t make it, but the 2nd of two roof shows then happened two days later on Sunday with Integrity‘s second NYC show ever, fellow ’90s metalcore pioneers EarthCrisis, and Deadguy, and newer hardcore bands Scarab, and All 4 All.
