Newport Folk Festival held its 2023 edition last weekend (7/28-7/30), and in addition to the live sets he caught, photographer Emilo Herce did portraits with many of the weekend’s performers, including Ron Gallo, Mdou Moctar, Peter One, Nickel Creek, Abraham Alexander, Del Water Gap, Slaughter Beach Dog, Joshua Ray Walker, Indigo De Souza, The Hold Steady, Bartees Strange, James Maple (who made Bartees a leather guitar strap with his name embossed on it), Goose, Madison Cunningham, The Backseat Lovers, Alice Phoebe Lou, Tommy Prine, Harlem Gospel Travelers, Jobi Riccio, Laden Valley, Raye Zaragoza, Free Range, and Mereba. This year’s Newport Folk also featured sets from James Taylor (a last minute fill in for Noah Kahan), My Morning Jacket, Maggie Rogers, Heavy Makeup, The Heavy Heavy, The Beths, Jon Batiste, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Aimee Mann, Angel Olsen, John Oates, Lana Del Rey, Billy Strings, Los Lobos, Gregory Alan Isakov, M. A GoFundMe has been launched to helped Mdou Moctar, who are stuck in the US indefinitely due to the coup in Niger.
