My Chemical Romance covered “Livin’ on a Prayer” at NJ show w/ Death Cab & Thursday (pics, video, setlists)

My Chemical Romance‘s Long Live The Black Parade tour hit their home state, NJ, for a show at MetLife Stadium on Saturday (8/9). Their performance of their classic 2006 rock opera was full of theatrics, pyro, spaghetti, and featured a murderous, capering clown. It was also interrupted part of the way through for the Mayor of Belleville, NJ, Michael Melham, to present the band with the key to the city.

After their album set, MCR took to a smaller stage set back a little on the floor where they ripped through a second set. That included their first performance of their first studio track, “Skylines and Turnstiles,” this tour, favorites like “Helena,” “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” “It’s Not a Fashion Statement, It’s a Fucking Deathwish,” and to close the night, a cover of Bon Jovi‘s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” which Way called the “New Jersey state anthem.” Watch video of that below. Death Cab for Cutie were on second, and this show falls in the middle of their three NYC Plans 20th anniversary shows at Brooklyn Paramount. Unlike the first of those on Friday, they didn’t play the album in full (MetLife only got “Soul Meets Body” off of it) but they did fit in a song or two off most of their discography from Transatlanticism onwards. MCR’s longtime friends who also count NJ as their home state, Thursday, got the evening started a little after 6 PM, playing to a stadium that was rapidly filling in. Geoff Rickly joked that Thursday had gotten to play MetLife before MCR during their short but spirited set.
