Moogfest 2016 in pics (Grimes, Blood Orange, Gary Numan, Laurie Anderson & more)

The 2016 edition of Moogfest went down in Durham, NC, last weekend, right before what would have been Bob Moog’s 82nd birthday. The festival of “future sound and future thought” brought together a diverse list of both electronic music icons (Gary Numan, Silver Apples, Laurie Anderson) and current players (Grimes, Explosions in the Sky, sun O))), Blood Orange, Tim Hecker, Empress Of, Julia Holter) and more for the four day festival.

Some of the specific highlights included a Night 1 overnight concert where attendees slept on beds while Robert Rich‘s synthetic lulabys sent them to slumberland; Gary Numan playing classic albums Replicas, The Pleasure Principle, and Telekon; Sam Aaron playing a techno set where he was coding it all live; the hyperactive dayglo of Grimes; and a family event featuring Yo Gabba Gabba.

The festival’s future thought was represented by interactive music instillations such as the Microsoft helmed Realiti: Inside The Music Of Grimes, which allowed festival attendees to manipulate Grimes’ 2015 track ‘Realiti’ using only their bodies. The fest also heralded the return, after a hiatus of over 30 years, the classic Minimoog Model D synthesizer.
