Australian singer-songwriter Maple Glider released her second album, the fantastic I Get Into Trouble, in October, and she’s been stateside in the past week for her first ever US shows. She made her NYC live debut at The Sultan Room on Tuesday night (12/5), where she mesmerized the crowd with just her voice and an acoustic guitar with a green ribbon tied on the neck. The bare bones setup recalled Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen’s earlier material, and Tori Zietsch’s voice has a similar devastating power and clarity. She really belted it on her rendition of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One,” (which she released as a single last year) which dripped with emotion, but her own material was no less potent. She introduced I Get Into Trouble track “Dinah” with a deeply felt story of how growing up in a restrictive religion inspired the song, and the album title. A truly beautiful set all around.
