UK rapper Little Simz is currently on tour in North America and stopped in NYC last week for a two-night stand at Brooklyn Paramount. I caught the second night, one of a million shows happening on Halloween in the city, and Simz and her band marked the occasion by dressing in blood-splattered, zombie-style outfits. Apart from that bit of gory flair, this was a terrific night of music that showcased Simz’s multi-hyphenate talents and her fantastic band.
Her 24-song set leaned heavily on her excellent new album Lotus, opening with its first two tracks, “Thief” and “Flood.” The record touches on the messy musical breakup between Simz and longtime producer Inflo, but she made it clear on Friday that those songs they created together are hers. The set also included many from her Mercury Prize-winning Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, plus a few from NO THANK YOU and GREY Area.
The show was divided into three parts. The first section included “I Love You, I Hate You,” “Introvert,” the joyous Amy-Winehouse-meets-2-Tone groove of “Young,” “101 FM” (during which Simz ventured into the crowd), and “Venom,” which closed the set dramatically as the stage went dark. When the lights came back up, Simz was behind the decks for a four-song DJ set pulling from her electronic-leaning 2024 EP Drop 7, turning the Paramount into a full-on dance party.
The final section returned to the full band, kicking off with “Lion” from Lotus before flowing into Introvert’s “Point and Kill.” She also delivered “Selfish” from Grey Area, “Miss Understood” from Introvert, and the title track from Lotus, which featured Simz on guitar and a killer drum solo from Haze. The main set wrapped with a sleek, sultry “Woman,” and the encore brought the night to a triumphant close with NO THANK YOU’s “Gorilla.” A great show from one of the most dynamic artists in any genre of our era.
