Lambrini Girls, Ekko Astral & Pons played The Sultan Room (pics)

Brighton, UK punks Lambrini Girls are on tour with Amyl and the Sniffers‘ now, and while in they were in the NYC-area for Amyl’s Jersey City show on Saturday, they stopped in Brooklyn for a headlining show at The Sultan Room on Friday night (7/19). Vocalist and guitarist Phoebe Lunny wasted no time in hopping offstage and riling up the crowd, and they were met with roars of approval as they led everyone in call-and-response shoutalongs to free Palestine, fuck TERFS, fuck Trump, fuck Biden, and fuck the police. Their set was a whole lot of fun in addition to being staunchly political, even working in a limbo competition.

Ekko Astral went on before them, ripping through material from this year’s pink balloons, one of our favorite albums of 2024 so far. That all sounded fantastic, as did the two new songs they played, which vocalist and bassist Jael Holzman said were from a post-apocalyptic album the band had been working on with unintended ties to our current political moment, specifically with Trump’s shooting. After the new songs, they ended the set with their barnstorming, cathartic pink balloons closer “i90,” a major highlight.

Ekko Astral will be on tour with Deerhoof in the fall, including an NYC show at The Ruins at Knockdown Center on September 26. Before that, they’ll be on a headlining Midwest tour in August, and they’re doing trans aid fundraisers at each show.
