“This is one of our favorite places to play,” King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s Stu Mackenzie told the crowd at Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday night. He seems to really mean it: this is the third year the Aussie band have played the Queens outdoor venue and the second where they’ve done two back-to-back shows.
This tour is just a little different than previous excursions, in that they had an orchestra with them to play their new album Phantom Island on Friday. Conducted and directed by Sarah Hicks, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s joined King Gizzard to play the album in full for the first set, and stuck around for their second set that pulled from the rest of their catalog.
Saturday night was billed as a “rock show” (aka no orchestra) but it was one that included a set where the band hovered around a rack of modular synthesizers for a tripped-out rave portion of the evening after the sun set. Before that was a free-flowing set that pulled from the band’s more metallic, hard-rocking material. The fans, aka the “weirdo swarm,” many of whom were dressed as wizards or lizards or both, were there for all of it.
After the electronic set, the band strapped back on the guitars for a third set that included “Sad Pilot,” “Altered Beast IV,” and “Rats in the Sky,” and they closed with the epic “Hypertension.”
