Julien Baker & Torres debuted new songs at first-ever show together (pics, video, setlist)

After making their late night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night, Julien Baker and Torres stuck around NYC on Wednesday to play their first official show as a duo. A link to tickets was emailed to mailing list subscribers and it sold out instantly, and rainy, windy weather that snarled subway service didn’t stop people from lining up outside well before doors opened.

Mid-set, Julien talked about the early show she played at Mercury Lounge back in 2016, and about packing up her gear and running over to Bowery Ballroom just in time to catch the end of Torres’ headlining set (editor’s note: I also made it to both of those shows that night, and on Wednesday night I once again found myself running over to Bowery after an early set at Mercury Lounge, this time to see MUNA’s Katie Gavin). These days Julien is playing stadiums as part of boygenius, and she sold out multiple nights at Webster Hall (and one night at Brooklyn Steel) when she was last in town in October for her NYC residency, so it was very much a treat to see her and Torres in such an intimate environment (they also kept up a running joke about how neither had performed live before).

They started the set with the same song they performed on Fallon, “Sugar In The Tank,” and played a bunch more new songs, which they confirmed are from a yet-to-be-released new album (“We’ve got a record,” Julien said, and Torres added, “in more ways than one”). Asked when it would come out, they’d only offer “soon,” but both of their social media accounts are now teasing new music this Friday (12/13), so it seems like we shouldn’t have long to wait. They also kept the country vibe going with a couple of well-chosen covers, of George Strait’s “Carrying Your Love With Me” and Tim McGraw’s “Something Like That,” and riffed on Songs: Ohia’s “Farewell Transmission.” See pictures from the show below, along with the setlist and attendee-taken video.

Julien and Torres haven’t announced a tour, but they are playing some festival shows in 2025, and you can see all dates below.
