Swedish folk singer/songwriter José González has been touring this year in support of his new album, Vestiges & Claws, out now on Mute. He already hit NYC for two shows in April, and last Thursday (5/28) he played London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. We caught that show, and pictures are in this post. Here’s an excerpt of a review, via tmrw:
Whilst at Scala he showcased his third album, Vestiges & Claws, playing almost all of its tracks, he treats Shepherd’s Bush Empire to an overflowing repertoire of his most compelling tunes. Whilst Cycling Trivialities and The Nest are welcome in their nostalgic warmth, for me the two songs that will always tug at the heartstrings are Crosses and Down The Line, both delivered with absolute sincerity. The melancholia of Crosses is offset by the beauty of its rich solo guitar sounds, whilst Down The Line builds into a vast soundscape of pulsing guitar strums and escalating drum beats that you can’t help but feel your heart swell to.
José also recently premiered an elegant reprise of “Open Book,” a B-side to the album version appearing on Vestiges & Claws. The variation features accompaniment by the NYC-based, pop-friendly chamber sextet, yMusic. It’s all the delicate sentiment of the original, plus an equally emotional orchestral flair.
