Herbie Hancock & Kamasi Washington @ Huntington Bank Pavilion (pics, setlists, video)

As for Washington, Hancock considers him a “very talented young man, very gifted. He has a wonderful viewpoint of music and the world, and his outlook on life is very profound and deep and secure.

“I hear a lot of the tradition of jazz in what he does, but also the new ideas of youth, too, coming out. And he’s got a great tone. I mean, his sound is wonderful. I like the way he thinks, I like the way he puts his pieces together. They sound joyous, and like it’s a celebration.

“He travels on tour with a pretty big group of people. I don’t know how he can do it. I don’t know how he can afford to do it. But it looks almost like a – carnival is not the right word, but a lot is happening, it’s very full, like a market (of) music.” – [Chicago Tribune]

Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington‘s tour hit Chicago on Saturday for a show at Huntington Bank Pavilion. For those hoping for a little cross-pollination between 79-year-old legend Hancock and legend-in-the-making Washington, that came at the very end of the night with Kamasi joining Herbie’s band (which includes Terrace Martin) for his classic early ’70s jazz-funk classic, “Chameleon.” You can watch video of that, and check out both Herbie and Kamasi’s setlists, below.
