Oscar-winning film composer Hans Zimmer celebrated his 67th birthday playing to a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening. Part of his current orchestral tour, this was Zimmer’s first live show in NYC since performing at Radio City in 2017. The onetime synth-pop musician, who has scored everything from Gladiator and Inception to The Lion King and the Dune films, was backed by an orchestra and his band of touring musicians that included his daughter on piano and Johnny Marr’s son Nile on lead guitar.
Including a 20-minute intermission, the show was three hours long, as they performed Zimmer’s most famous film works, and the composer told stories about their composition. The pulsating combination of synthesized orchestral rock culminated with a suite of music from Bond film No Time to Die and the more minimal “Time” from director Christopher Nolan’s Inception.
