The Episcopal church on the corner of 20th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan has lived many lives over the years, serving as the home for Peter Gaiten’s iconic 80’s/90’s club Limelight, followed by stints as a high end mall, a gym, an upscale Chinese restuarant, and various clubs. For its next act, it’s set to become a theater. Forbes reports that Broadway producer Hunter Arnold, director Michael Arden, and film distributor Roadside Attractions have joined forces for the project. More from Forbes:
According to the blueprints, the new theater will have a circular stage with about 320 seats spread across two levels. The 21,000-square foot space will also offer four bars for theatergoers, and dressing rooms for the performers will be built on the third floor of the building.
“We believe that this is the most beautiful building in Manhattan, and what we would like to do is create a very kind of cultural institution…where we can present high-quality entertainment,” Scott Moore, marketing director at Arnold’s production company, said during a state licenses and permits committee meeting.
Marvel Architects, who previously renovated the Lyric Theatre for Harry Potter & The Cursed Child and transformed an old tobacco warehouse into St. Ann’s Warehouse, will oversee the project. Stay tuned for more details.
