A second man has been found dead in Newtown Creek, which separates part of Brooklyn and Queens, after leaving an event at Brooklyn Mirage. In a statement, the New York City Police Department said that a body found in the creek had been identified as 27 year old John Castic, NBC News reports. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene, and police said his body had no obvious signs of trauma.
Castic, a senior analyst at Goldman Sachs, was last seen around 3 AM on Saturday, July 29 at Brooklyn Mirage for a show with Zeds Dead, Boogie T, Deathpact, Sippy, and SuperAve. Fellow finance worker William Sullivan told New York Post that Castic hadn’t been at the show alone, but left when he started feeling sick. “It was late, the concert was almost over, and he decided to call an Uber and just leave,” Sullivan told New York Post. “We don’t know if he got in [though].”
The venue sent video of Castic leaving to police, and his friend Eamon Stenson told Patch that the Find My app placed Castic on the Metropolitan Avenue Bridge at 3:50 AM. Castic was reported missing by a friend on Sunday.
Another man, 27 year old psychologist Karl Clemente, was found in Newtown Creek on June 16, after last being seen outside of Brooklyn Mirage on June 11 around 10 PM. Police said he may have been denied entry to the venue, where Excision was playing that night, and described him as heavily intoxicated. A post to the EZoo NYC 2023 Facebook group says that CCTV footage from Brooklyn Mirage shows him walking on Meserole St. towards Varick Ave after leaving the venue, and another CCTV shows him turning right and proceeding on Varick towards Meadow St.
GMA News Online reports that security footage obtained by the NYPD shows Clemente running inside a lumber warehouse in the same area, near Brooklyn Mirage and directly in front of the creek where he was eventually found. His wallet, which a concerned citizen said they found inside the warehouse, was sent to his parents in upstate New York before his body was found. A GoFundMe is raising money for funeral services for him.
The police department told NBC that “the investigation remains ongoing at this time” into the deaths of the two mens, and the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner did not respond to their request for more information. The cause of death of both men is pending at this time.
