One band that didn’t perform an album in its entirety was co-headliners Fall Out Boy, though they did play selections from every one of their eight records in chronological order, offering a timeline of their artistic evolution from emo upstarts to stadium rockers.
On Saturday, the band brought Iron Maiden-levels of pyro to the fest, with bassist Pete Wentz outfitting one of instruments with a flame-thrower to spew even more fire from the stage.
If “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race,” as the band contended in the song of the same name, they brought the nukes.
Toward the end of their set, frontman Patrick Stump punctured the bombast with a confession.
“It’s weird being not-young,” he acknowledged. “I thought I was young.”
Oh, but he still was.
At least for a night.
Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump also joined Motion City Soundtrack to sing “Everything Is Alright” with them during their Commit This To Memory set. Elsewhere on the lineup, there was Taking Back Sunday playing Tell All Your Friends, Thursday playing Full Collapse (with Sloppy Jane joining for “Standing on the Edge of Summer”), Coheed & Cambria playing most of Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV plus two favorites from In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Jimmy Eat World playing Bleed American, Saves The Day playing Stay What You Are, Saosin playing their self-titled album, Bayside playing their self-titled album, Underoath playing They’re Only Chasing Safety, New Found Glory playing Sticks and Stones, The Wonder Years playing The Greatest Generation, Basement playing Colourmeinkindness, and more. And though a Dusk and Summer set was advertised for Dashboard Confessional, they opted for a selection of classics. The All-American Rejects and The Distillers were supposed to play but dropped off at the last minute (see statements from both bands), and Boys Like Girls and The Paradox were added in their places.
One of the newer bands who played the fest was a supergroup of musicians whose classic bands almost all played the fest, L.S. Dunes (members of My Chemical Romance, Thursday, Coheed, and Circa Survive), who announced their sophomore album Violet just a few days earlier. You can pre-order our exclusive “twilight” vinyl variant of that album in the BV store.
Alternative Press‘ Anna Zanes was also on the scene, conducting interviews backstage with L.S. Dunes, Thursday, Coheed, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Underoath, and other bands, and you can watch those and more at Veeps.
