Weezer followed their most recent LP, 2021’s Van Weezer, with a series of four seasonal EPs, SZNZ: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, in 2022. They were planning to give the series a box set release, which they announced on the first anniversary of Spring in March of 2023, but the updates stop there. The band’s assistant and “unofficial fifth member” Karl Koch has now revealed that the box set isn’t happening. In a post on the Weezerpedia Discord server, he wrote, “ok official word: i just learned the SZNZ box was in fact cancelled, im sorry to confirm. Apparently high cost vs. not expecting enough sales to make it work. Feels kinda like the Broadway cancel thing… just letting SZNS be ‘as is’, and enjoy.”
The Broadway residency was also related to SZNZ: an announcement for it read, “Each night’s show will not only correspond with a different season’s EP, but will see the band reaching deep into their catalog to play a unique set of Weezer classics, many of which have not been played in years. A fifth night of shows will be a mix of all the songs from SZNZ and Weezer fan favorites from the previous four nights.” The residency was scheduled for September of 2022, and Rivers Cuomo revealed it was cancelled “due to low ticket sales and unbelievably high expenses.”
Weezer’s next tour, “Voyage to the Blue Planet,” celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Blue Album, their classic 1994 debut, and includes an NYC show on September 11 at Madison Square Garden with The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. There’s also now a Weezer wall in Brooklyn.
