Oasis are back and everyone’s celebrating, including Weezer, who took to social media to welcome the band back. They posted a screenshot of Liam Gallagher, who’s known for engaging with fans (and haters) on social media, responding “yeah” to a 2021 tweet asking if he likes Weezer, and then in a followup tweet, Weezer said, “Anyway, here’s Wonderwall,” referencing a popular meme and also posting a video of Rivers covering the song at a 2018 San Francisco solo show. As NME points out, Liam Gallagher called Rivers “my new favorite rock star” back in 2005. “Very strange man,” he said. “He’s just the total opposite to me, man. He’s just very timid. He’s like Yoda or something. But I respect that. He’s a top man. There’s totally a place for him. He’s like the Andy Warhol of fucking music, that’s what I think.”
Rivers also told NME about Weezer doing an entire Oasis covers set in 1998 under the name Goat Punishment. “It was a real education because it was on the heels of [1996’s] ‘Pinkerton’,” Rivers said, “which is a very tortured, personal, confessional and musically-progressive album, and then I got interested in Oasis because they’re the opposite of that – they’re very broad, universal lyrics, and simple songs with chords that anyone could play, and I wanted to really get inside their way of doing things, so we learned a bunch of their songs and played a show.”
Oasis have so far announced UK and Ireland shows for summer 2025, and they’re promising to “go to other continents outside of Europe later next year.”
Meanwhile, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley is not joining Oasis (or Linkin Park).
