Last year, Swedish musician Weatherday (the one-person band whose leader goes only by the name Sputnik) announced that their sophomore album Hornet Disaster would come out in March of 2025 via Topshelf, six years removed from their beloved 2019 debut album Come In (and also following a collab EP with Seoul artist Asian Glow and a four-way split with US emo bands Oolong, Michael Cera Palin, and Camp Trash). Today, Weatherday shared lead singles “Angel” and “Heartbeats” and revealed more details on the LP.
“Angel,” which also has a music video, fits in especially well with Weatherday’s US emo friends, from the mathy guitar licks to the yelpy singing that sometimes reminds me of Bren Lukens from Modern Baseball, and it’s a total singalong anthem. “Heartbeats,” meanwhile, finds Weatherday more in noisy bedroom pop territory, and a press release suggests the song title is a nod to The Knife’s track of the same name. In an interview with Eli Enis for Stereogum, Sputnik said, “I was trying to do something simple. The album is supposed to be my conventional ‘poppy’ album. It has choruses and some hooks. I set out to do something really simple and normal, and I feel like I succeeded. This is, like, really conventional. […] I wanted the album to be more explosive and have more meat to it. Come In is the happy album, and this is the sad one. So I wanted it to be more harsh. There were harsher emotions expressed on here, so it naturally became more abrasive.”
The album comes out on March 19 via Topshelf (pre-order), and Weatherday is gearing up for a North American tour that starts three days prior to the album’s release. That includes a NYC show on March 20 at Bowery Ballroom. All dates are listed below.
