Watch Weezer perform & talk ‘Blue Album’ with Joyce Manor’s Barry Johnson

Joyce Manor’s Barry Johnson has talked about Weezer‘s influence on his band since pretty much day one, and over a decade into their career, Weezer tapped them to open part of their 2023 “Indie Rock Roadtrip!” tour, during which Barry joined Weezer on stage to play their ’90s classic “You Gave Your Love To Me Softly,” which Joyce Manor had also covered years earlier. But their collaboration/friendship didn’t stop there. In addition to both being tapped to perform on John Mulaney’s Netflix talk show, Barry joined Weezer during a half-hour-long Spotify session celebrating the 30th anniversary of Weezer’s 1994 debut Blue Album.

Barry was among a panel of Weezer associates who interviewed the band, also including Karl Koch (“the 5th Weezer”) and producer/songwriter Suzy Shinn, and he spoke to them about his appreciation for the minimalism of the Blue Album artwork, booklet, and runtime (around the 19:30 mark of the segment), the guitar work at the beginning of “Surf Wax America” and the contributions of former guitarist Jason Cropper (around 25:15), and more. He also performed “Surf Wax America” with Weezer, sharing lead vocal duties with Rivers Cuomo, and he sung it like he wrote it–in fact, it probably comes as no surprise that Barry singing lead on a faster Weezer song like “Surf Wax” sounds a lot like a Joyce Manor song. Weezer’s Blue Album 30th anniversary celebration continues with the “Voyage to the Blue Planet” tour, which will find the band performing the album in full with support from The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. That tour hits NYC’s Madison Square Garden on September 11. All dates are listed below.

Joyce Manor have a big album anniversary of their own that they’re celebrating this year, the 10th anniversary of Never Hungover Again. They’ll be playing it in full at the UK’s Outbreak Fest this weekend, and at The Fest in Gainesville, FL this fall. They’re also opening The Gaslight Anthem‘s summer tour, including NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage on August 16 and NYC’s Central Park SummerStage on August 21. All of their dates are listed below too.
