Taking Back Sunday wrapped up their annual Holiday Spectacular at Starland Ballroom on Saturday night (Dec. 7) and they had some surprises in store. At the afternoon holiday pop-up, they did a five-song acoustic set, including a performance of “Existentialism On Prom Night” by guitarist/secondary vocalist John Nolan‘s band Straylight Run, whose performances are few and far between these days. (Straylight Run and Taking Back Sunday will also both play When We Were Young 2025, which is Straylight Run’s first-announced show since they reunited to open TBS’ 2021 holiday shows.)

Then, during the proper nighttime show, Taking Back Sunday reunited with their Where You Want To Be / Louder Now-era guitarist/secondary vocalist Fred Mascherino for the first time since Fred left the band in 2007. They played Louder Now‘s “Liar (It Takes One to Know One),” and then John came back on stage and they played “MakeDamnSure” with both John and Fred. No idea if this will ever happen again, but if they decide to do more shows as a super version of Taking Back Sunday with both of their iconic secondary singers in tow, I for one would not complain. This was Fred’s second big reunion this year; in August, his pre-TBS band Breaking Pangaea (whose drummer Will Noon is also the drummer of Straylight Run) reunited to open for the reunited This Day Forward. hate5six has a great video of their full set, and if you haven’t already seen that, you can watch that below too.
