While Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company (Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann joined by John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Oteil Burbridge) went on what they said was their final tour in 2023, they returned to the stage for Sphere residencies in Las Vegas in 2024 and 2025, and this past weekend they celebrated 60 years of the Grateful Dead with three big hometown shows at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park–10 years after the ‘Fare Thee Well’ shows with that Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann played with Phish’s Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby, and Jeff Chimenti in celebration of the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary. Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson, and the Trey Anastasio Band opened Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night’s shows, respectively, and each joined Dead & Co during their set as well.
On Friday (8/1), which would’ve been Jerry Garcia’s 83rd birthday, Strings came out towards the end of Dead & Co’s set for “Wharf Rat.” Earlier in the evening they welcomed another special guest, Grahame Lesh, son late Dead co-founder Phil Lesh. He joined them on the Phil-written/sung classic “Box of Rain,” with Grahame playing his father’s Big Brown bass, and “Playing in the Band.”
For Saturday’s show (8/2), Sturgill joined Dead & Co for a rendition of “Morning Dew,” which he previously performed with Bobby Weir and his Dead Ahead band at their Riviera Cancún, Mexico Dead Ahead festival in January. Grahame also came out again to play bass on “St. Stephen.”
Trey joined Dead & Co for their second set on Sunday night (8/3) on “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Moutain,” and Grahame joined them for their next song, “Broken Arrow.” Watch video of all that below.
Friday also saw the block long Harrington St christened Jerry Garcia Street. Jerry’s daughter, Trixie Garcia, attended the dedication, and said, “I hope that you all get a chance to enjoy the music, dance, hug, smile,” KCRA reports. “Cherish what’s valuable, what’s significant in life.”
Grahame Lesh also led his own Grateful Dead 60th anniversary celebration in San Francisco this past weekend with tons of guests, including Stephen Stills, Jerry Garcia Band’s Melvin Seals, members of Dawes, and more.
