The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the Lollapalooza headliners this weekend (they play on Friday night), and ahead of their festival set they played a much more intimate Chicago show at Riviera Theatre on Wednesday night. They had a few surprises in store for the occasion, perhaps the least expected of which was when they brought out Barry Williams, who played Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch. Williams, who was a guest on Billy Corgan’s “The Magnificent Others” podcast in May, joined the Pumpkins on, what else, Brady Bunch classic “It’s a Sunshine Day.” Watch video of that below.
Another special guest, their former bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, came out for the final song of the night, “The Everlasting Gaze,” and earlier they gave “War Dreams of Itself” off 2024’s Aghori Mhori Mei its live debut. Many people sighted Flavor Flav in the audience, though he never joined the band onstage. Public Enemy had played Chicago’s Credit Union 1 Amphitheater earlier in the evening, opening for Guns N’ Roses.
Smashing Pumpkins are gearing up to begin their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 30th anniversary tour in September, and to warm up for that, a good chunk of their set on Wednesday pulled from the double album, including their first performance of “Thirty-Three” since 2018.
