MJ Lenderman and his backing band The Wind have been on a near-endless tour supporting his excellent new album Manning Fireworks, and they played a very special show on MJ’s birthday (February 4) at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. In addition to covering Smog’s “37 Push Ups” (which they’ve done a handful of times since 2024) during their main set, they sung “Happy Birthday” for MJ to kick off the encore and then proceeded to cover Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel” with help from New Orleans artist Thomas Dollbaum and The Stooges‘ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with guest lead vocals from Deedee of MSPAINT. Deedee just posted video of that cover to MSPAINT Instagram’s stories and wrote “MJPAINT in NOLA last week, type shit dreams are made of,” and it looks like it was a very awesome moment. When Lenderman and Deedee sing together during the chorus, it takes things to an even more exciting level. According to Setlist.fm, it was the first time MJ Lenderman ever covered “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and the second time he covered “Drunken Angel.” He also recently teamed up with Waxahatchee to cover a different Lucinda Williams song, “Abandoned,” for an Apple Music Sessions EP. This was also the first I’ve heard of MSPAINT and MJ Lenderman collaborating, but not the first time Deedee expressed his fandom for Lenderman. Towards the end of last year, Deedee tweeted, “So much dope ass music this year but Manning Fireworks has a grip on my soul in a way that can only be described as that moment when u dock the house boat at the himbo dome.”
Deedee coincidentally shared the footage of the Stooges cover the same night that MJ Lenderman stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to play “Joker Lips” from Manning Fireworks, which marked his second time on late night TV after playing “Wristwatch” on Fallon last fall. Lenderman’s tour continues and hits NYC on April 28, 29, and 30 at Brooklyn Steel with Joanna Sternberg on night one, This Is Lorelei on night two, and Nap Eyes on night three. Lenderman recently did a This Is Lorelei cover on tour too.
The MJPAINT collab was also two days after Deedee from MSPAINT joined Militarie Gun on stage at Run For Cover’s Something In The Way festival in Boston for their collaborative song “Delete It.”
