Saturday, January 4 would’ve been the late David Berman‘s 58th birthday and in the years since his 2019 passing, the day has been turned into a celebration of his life and songs, DCBday. In NYC, there was a show at Bowery Ballroom that had Michael Shannon, Katy Kirby, Torres, Titus Andronicus, Majesties, The Cartoons, Matt Hunter (Silver Jews/New Radiant Storm King/Dusty Fate), Ryan Walsh (Hallelujah the Hills), and more covering Silver Jews and Purple Mountains songs. Proceeds from the show benefitted Musicares and the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.
We haven’t found a full setlist for the Bowery show but as Stereogum noted, Titus Andronicus’ performed Purple Mountains songs “That’s Just The Way That I Feel” and “Margaritas At The Mall” and Silver Jews’ “Rebel Jew”; Michael Shannon (backed by The Blue Arrangements) did Silver Jews classics “Smith & Jones Forever” and “People” (both from American Water); and Torres’ set included Purple Mountains’ “Snow is Falling in Manhattan.”

Michael Shannon will soon be on tour with Jason Narducy, playing REM’s Fables of the Reconstruction in full, with a NYC stop at Brooklyn Steel on March 8.
