You already heard the Death Pill song from the Death Pill / Shooting Daggers split that comes out on New Heavy Sounds tomorrow (11/17), and now here’s the Shooting Daggers song. With “Not My Rival,” the London band deliver a shouting, sneering, purposeful punk anthem that toes the line between classic ’80s hardcore and ’90s grunge-punk in a way that feels totally fresh in the 2020s. We’re premiering the song and its video; directed, filmed, and edited by Martyna Bannister/Gingerdope.
“‘Not My Rival’ is a song about dismantling the male gaze, fighting against the internalised patriarchal messages that we all unconsciously absorb,” the band says. “It’s about breaking the cycle of female rivalry. We want to encourage lifting each other up instead of tearing each other down.”
“In the video we wanted to showcase unity and sorority in the Queercore/punk community/scene,” they add. “Martyna Bannister has captured perfectly the organism of the crowd and sense of community we wanted to reflect.”
