Turnstile have a lot of great riffs. Like: big, chunky, memorable riffs to bang your head, air guitar, and hum along to, riffs that steal the show as much as their shoutalong choruses. None of the songs that Turnstile released from their upcoming album Never Enough so far have had a riff like that, but don’t fret (no pun intended)–new single “Look Out For Me” has a Turnstile riff for the ages. After the kind of suspenseful build-up that Turnstile seem to be very drawn to in the Never Enough era, they release the tension and break out into a bulldozing power chord sequence that holds its own next to “Blackout” and “Real Thing.”
That riff alone would make “Look Out For Me” a contender for my favorite Never Enough single released thus far, and it only gets better from there. The “NOW MY HEART IS HANGING BY A THREAD” shoutalong feels like the spiritual sequel to “Fly Again”‘s “STILL CAN’T FEEL THE HOLE YOU LEFT BEHIND,” and the nearly-seven-minute song dissolves into an IDM break that’s as well-suited for a blissful rave as the first half of the song is for a hardcore show. During the transition, the Baltimore band sample an emotional clip from hometown classic The Wire that gives the song its title. Never Enough‘s title track might’ve seemed like an intentionally-on-the-nose rewrite of Glow On‘s opener “Mystery,” but Turnstile have never written a song like “Look Out For Me” before.
As Turnstile recently revealed, Never Enough will have an accompanying visual album with music videos for every song directed by vocalist Brendan Yates and guitarist Pat McCrory, and “Look Out For Me” was released alongside its video, which you can check out below. The film premieres at Tribeca Festival.
Turnstile have so far played three shows since announcing Never Enough, at which they’ve played the album’s first three singles, “Never Enough,” “Seein’ Stars,” and “Birds.” Next up is their album release show in Brooklyn: Under The K Bridge on June 5, one day before the album comes out, with Teezo Touchdown, Boy Harsher, and Big Boy.
