Michigan indie-emo band The Weak Days have announced their first-ever full-length album, The Magic’s Gone. It’s a concept album that serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the band’s 2020 concept EP The Fabric of Our Lives, as the band explains:
The Magic’s Gone is an emo low-fantasy narrative album that is both a prequel and sequel to our EP The Fabric of Our Lives. Our narrator, The Bard, performs the task set for them: telling tales of times past. It is our collective visit to the past of Nowhere, telling the story of two intrepid young people known as The Lamb and The Luminary, and their misadventure.
As you can hear on lead single “Magic 2: It’s Gone,” the high-concept subject matter is matched by the band’s theatrical delivery, which nails a balance between Broadway musicals and Midwest emo. The band tells us that it was “pretty much the first song [they] wrote lyrics for” and they add, “It really helped shape the sonic path for the record. It exists well within the story of the record, at an impasse for the two main characters; but I think also works well deconstructed from the album.” Check it out below.
To help tell the story, different characters are voiced by different band members, with vocal duties being shared by band founder Dustin Reinink, bassist RB Roe (also of Save Face, Get Tuff, ex-Jetty Bones), and guitarist Alex Ryan, as well as Looming members Jess Knight and Brandon Carnes. The Magic’s Gone is also the band’s first album to feature new band member Willow LaForge (also of Grey Matter and Rent Strike). It was produced by Chris Teti of TWIABP. It comes out November 18 via Late Again Records (pre-order).
