The Rolling Stones pay tribute to Marianne Faithfull

The legendary Marianne Faithfull passed away at the age of 78 today, and now some of her closest collaborators have paid tribute, The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger, who also dated Marianne in the late ’60s and apparently wrote multiple Stones classics inspired by their relationship, said, “I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull. She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”

Keith Richards wrote, “My heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family! I’m so sad and will miss her!! Love, Keith.”

Ronnie Wood, who joined the Stones years after the band first worked with Marianne but went on to perform with her as well, shared, “Marianne will be dearly missed ❤️🙏Bless her xx.”

Mick and Keith (and former Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham) wrote Marianne’s 1964 debut single “As Tears Goes By,” which the Stones also released their own successful version of a year later. Mick, Keith, and Marianne also co-wrote her haunting 1969 single “Sister Morphine,” which the Stones did a version of on 1971’s Sticky Fingers. It was paired on its 1969 single release with the Jagger-produced “Something Better,” which Marianne performed for the Stones’ 1968 concert film The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

The band also posted a video of them performing “As Tears Go By,” captioned “for Marianne.” See all four tributes below.
