The Only Ones frontman Peter Perrett has announced a new double album, The Cleansing, due out on November 1 via Domino. It’s the follow-up to 2019’s Humanworld, and he made it with his sons Jamie and Peter Jr., his live band, and some exciting guests, including Johnny Marr, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, Carlos O’Connell of Fontaines D.C., and Alice Go of Dream Wife.
“I know some of the subject matter is death, suicide and depression,” Perrett says, “but I feel there is an uplifting atmosphere to the album, because I’m obviously enjoying recognising what is going on around me.” He adds, “I feel that, the older you get, the more reflective you get. I’d always been flippant about the way I approached life, only living in the moment, but then you start to look back at the choices made. I wanted to be more focused about what I wanted to say. I’m still writing about love and the human condition, but perhaps more sentimental, and less abject cynicism, than usual. I also am more focused about the music. Before, I’d put down two guitars, bass and drums, and that was the song: I didn’t give the process much thought. But then we started opening things up.”
The lead single is “I Wanna Go With Dignity,” which features Gillespie and O’Connell. According to the press release, it’s dedicated to the “high priestess of punk,” Fiona H. Stevenson aka Fay Wolftree, and the lyrics are inspired by Irish journalist David Cavanagh. Watch the video below.
Perrett with play London’s Moth Club on October 19; it’s his only upcoming show at the moment, and tickets go on sale Friday, August 16 at 10 AM BST.
