The Dodos frontman Meric Long has announced Kablooey, his debut solo album, which — suprise! — will be out this Friday (10/24) via Polyvinyl. He did release an album under the name FAN back in 2018 but this is his first under his own name. The album features Maryam Qudus (La Luz/Spacemoth) and saxophonist Forest Day.
Meric says the album was inspired by making music with his daughter. “It all began when I tried to see if I could make her drum set sound cool,” says Long, who adds that inspiration triggered the rest. “This album was really meant to be fun and not too purposeful. I put a lot into it as one would expect, but I really just wanted to make something that was fun and allowed me to follow my more ‘amped up kid in a candy store’ impulses.”
The first single from Kablooey is “A Small Act of Defiance,” which is indeed fun with a fuzzed-out bassline and manic horns. Listen below.
