The Breeders release their 30th anniversary edition of Last Splash on Friday and among the unearthed goodies is a version of single “Divine Hammer” where Dinosaur Jr‘s J Mascis takes lead vocals.
Kelley Deal told Uncut how it came about: “At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’ But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I like his voice and the idiosyncratic way he sings and delivers lines. So I thought it was really neat.”
They’ve made a video for “Divine Mascis” featuring J himself singing along and you can watch that below.
This is not the only Breeders/Mascis collab from the Last Splash era. He also reworked “Do You Love Me Now” (which ended up as a b-side for “Divine Hammer”) and “Saints,” and you can listen to those below as well.
The Breeders bring their Last Splash tour to Brookyn’s Kings Theatre on Saturday (9/23) and then will be back in NYC to open for Olivia Rodrigo at four Madison Square Garden shows in 2024.
