Tame Impala‘s first new album since 2020, Deadbeat, is officially out now via Columbia. As previewed on some of the singles, it’s his most dancefloor-friendly album yet, inspired by bush doof culture and the Western Australian rave scene. Kevin Parker talked about the meaning of Deadbeat‘s title a little with Zane Lowe recently, telling him, “There are some people that have spoken to me and gone like, I don’t know why you called your album that man, like why are you being so down on yourself, like why so self-degrading? But I just don’t see it like that. For me it’s like a celebration of the feeling of being these things, like a loser or a, you know.”
“I’ve always had a sick satisfaction from being hard on myself in my lyrics, I guess that’s no secret really,” Parker aded. “But for me it’s freeing. To make beautiful music and then put a sticker on it that says that, like ‘piece of shit.’ It just, to me, it gives all of that meaning. It gives all those feelings that have sort of like followed me around my whole life. It gives them purpose and sort of like flips them around, you know what I mean?” Watch video of that below.
Parker and his band also did a new, all-acoustic Tiny Desk Concert, their first appearance in the series’ NPR studio after doing a “Tiny Desk At Home” set in 2020. This is being billed as the first full unplugged performance of Parker’s career, and it includes “Loser” and “Dracula” off Deadbeat, “Borderline” off The Slow Rush, and “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” off Currents. Tame Impala will be on tour starting later this month, with support from Fcukers on the 2025 North American shows. The run begins with four nights at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on October 27, 28, 31, and November 1, and you can see all dates below.
