Stars‘ full-length debut album, 2001’s Nightsongs, was originally released on small indie label Le Grand Magistery and has basically been out of print since its release, and only ever got a vinyl pressing in Japan. This is being rectified, thankfully, with a new double-LP deluxe edition of the album that’s due out October 13 via Sweat Records.
In addition to the original 14 songs — including “My Radio,” “Counting Stars On The Ceiling,” “On Peak Hill” and a gorgeous cover of The Smiths’ “This Charming Man” — the second disc features bonus track “Toxic Holiday,” plus the non-album tracks from their first two EPs, A Lot of Little Lies for the Sake of One Big Truth and The Comeback. For fans of Stars’ early era, this is a dream come true.

“these records were made at the turn of the century in a studio apartment in the west village and a bedroom in brooklyn and another bedroom in montreal,” the band write. “they were our one shot at glory. they were our only hope. they were the best we could do. and they gave birth to the next 25 years of our lives. if you haven’t heard them, you may be surprised at how different they are from the work we did later. we were quieter then, and less sure, and we never went to bed before 4 a.m. and never woke up before noon. we were broke and crazy and lost and stoned on moldy weed we kept in a gym bag in the closet. we made them to be together. we made them because we were aimless and lazy and didn’t want to work. we made them because it was inside us. we hope you enjoy meeting these records again, or maybe for the first time. they aren’t perfect, but they are beautiful. and they are Stars.”
